Key & Compass presents:
Suveh Nux
by David Fisher

Suveh Nux is a Z-machine interactive fiction game written with Inform 6 and is © 2007 by David Fisher. It was entered in the 2007 One Room Game Competition a.k.a. ORGC 2007 where it won 1st place. At the 2007 XYZZY Awards, it won the Best Puzzles award; it was also a finalist for Best Game, Best Setting, and Best Individual Puzzle (opening the vault door). In 2011, it tied for the 34th spot in the Interactive Fiction Top 50 of all time (2011 edition).

You play as a servant to a man who is implied to be a wizard. In the course of your duties, an unknown assailant locks you inside your master's vault. You will need to learn some magic to escape.

This solution is by David Welbourn, and is based on Version 1.0 of the game.

Darkness

> look.

Vault

So what can we see?

> x cage. x scroll. x shelf. x door. x me.

First thing: get some light in here.

> touch shelf. take vial. x vial. shake vial. (+10%)

> x book. open book. (You see "Suveh Nux" in silver letters.)

> say suveh nux. (+10%; the room is filled with light.)

Examine everything.

> look. take scroll. x it. put it on shelf.

> x creature. listen.

> x parchment. x crystal. take crystal.

> x vial. x door. x floor. x ceiling.

> x north wall. x east wall. x south wall. x west wall.

> x shelf.

Read all of the book. Try all of the spells.

> x book. (You can now read the first page properly.)

> x cover. turn to page two.

> say aveh tia. (The room becomes hot.)

> say suveh tia. (+10%; the room is no longer hot.)

> turn page. say aveh madah. say suveh madah.

> turn page. say suveh sensi. say aveh sensi.

> turn page. say aveh haiak. touch hands. say suvek haiak.

> turn page. say aveh nux ani mato. z. z. (The light goes out.)

> say suveh nux ani mato. z. z. (The light returns.)

> say aveh nux ani to. (+10%) z. say suveh nux.

Following the example of the parchment, point at everything while holding the crystal.

Note that reading the book and pointing at things are steps that you can't skip; the game will not let you use any magic words that you haven't learned yet.

> point at cage. ("imoentar") point at crystal. ("kirabesso")

> point at me. ("ami") point at door. ("fireno")

> point at floor. ("tolanisu") point at ceiling. ("amunisu")

> point at east wall. ("nisu-esa") point at south wall. ("nisu-so")

> point at west wall. ("nisu-ewa") point at shelf. ("agri")

> point at scroll. ("anutasl") point at parchment. ("amutasl")

> point at book. ("kimutasl") point at vial. ("siqui")

> point at creature. (Don't know where it is.)

Capture the invisible creature.

> aveh haiak tolanisu. (+10%. The floor becomes sticky.)

> listen. search floor. (+5%)

> touch creature. point at creature. put creature in cage.

> suveh haiak tolanisu. (The floor is no longer sticky.)

Following the example from page four, use extreme cold and heat to break the door. You'll need two "cold" for extreme cold, and four "hot" (two of which to counteract the cold).

> suveh tia fireno ani matoto. (Cold door in six turns.)

> suveh tia fireno ani tomato. (Cold door in five turns.)

> aveh tia fireno ani tomato. (Hot door in five turns.)

> aveh tia fireno ani mamato. (Hot door in four turns.)

> aveh tia fireno ani toto. (Hot door in three turns.)

> aveh tia fireno ani mato. (Hot door in two turns.)

> z. (+10%. Door is extremely cold.)

> z. (+20%. Door is extremely hot and cracks. A block is now separate from the rest of the door.)

Move the block.

> x block. point at block. ("firenos")

> suveh tia fireno. suveh tia fireno. (The door is no longer hot.)

> suveh tia firenos. suveh tia firenos. (The block is no longer hot.)

> push block. pull block.

> save.

> aveh haiak firenos. (Block is now sticky.)

> pull block. (Grip isn't quite good enough.)

> aveh haiak. (Now you're sticky too.)

> pull block. (Grip is good, but block is too heavy.)

> suveh madah firenos. (Block is lighter.)

> pull block. (Grip is good, but block isn't quite light enough.)

> aveh madah firenos. (Restore block to normal weight.)

> suveh madah firenos ani to. suveh madah firenos. (Make the block extra-light.)

> pull block. (+10%. You remove the block and escape through the hole.)

*** You have escaped ***

Amusing Actions

> about. credits.

> cry. laugh. sing. pray. fly. die. dance. dig.

> map. win. undo. lose. undo.

> alohomora. rezrov. open sesame. abracadabra.

> xyzzy. plugh. plugh me. plover. plover me.

You can think about an amazing number of things:

> think about game. think about easter eggs. (Numbering system?)

> think about book. think about binary. (!!!)

> think about hexadecimal. think about octal.

> think about ascii. think about math.

> think about nothing. think about pink elephants.

> think about life. think about master. think about manuscripts.

> think about magic. think about history. think about science.

> think about key. think about scroll. think about latimer.

> think about parchment. think about crystal.

> think about creature. think about cage.

> think about love. think about job. think about food. think about plover.

> think about xyzzy. ecksyuzzy. think about plugh.

> think about god. think about religion. think about joy.

> think about vault. think about air. think about death.

> think about wealth. think about future. think about past.

> think about suveh. think about nux. think about sensi.

> think about tia. think about haiak. think about madah.

And more actions:

> yell. whistle. clap.

> smell creature. smell me.

> smell vial. think about tannery.

> look through crystal. point crystal at cage. eat crystal.

> kick door. kick me. kick floor.

> eat block. eat door. eat creature. eat me.

> erase door. erase creature. erase floor. erase me. undo.

> write in book. look under door.

> slide. (when floor is slippery.)

> twitter. give up. throw up.

Overheat the vial, forcing the vial to pop open. The deadly fumes kill you.

> aveh tia siqui ani to. aveh tia siqui. undo. suveh tia siqui.

Easter Eggs

Let's revisit one particular amusing response:

> think about binary.

I used convertbinary.com to translate the binary messages:

Assuming we know all the magic words, let's try to do those things.

Make everything glow:

> suveh nux ami. (You glow.)

> suveh nux fireno. suveh nux firenos. (Door and block glow.)

> suveh nux tolanisu. suveh nux amunisu. (Floor and ceiling glow.)

> suveh nux nisu-ewa. suveh nux nisu-so. suveh nux nisu-esa. (Walls glow.)

> suveh nux imoentar. suveh nux siqui. suveh nux kirabesso. (Cage, vial, crystal glow.)

> suveh nux kimutasl. suveh nux amutasl. suveh nux anutasl. (Book, parchment, scroll glow.)

> suveh nux agri. (+2%. Shelf glows. You get a chocolate egg.)

> x egg. (Feel free to eat it, keep it, or give it to the creature.)

Stick to the ceiling:

> aveh haiak amunisu ani to. aveh haiak amunisu. (Ceiling extra-sticky.)

> aveh haiak. (You are sticky.)

> suveh haiak tolanisu. (Floor slippery, so your sticky self can jump from it.)

> suveh madah ani to. suveh madah. (You are extra-bouyant.)

> jump. (Stuck to ceiling!)

> suveh haiak. (+2%. You are no longer sticky and fall. You get another chocolate egg.)

> aveh haiak tolanisu. (Floor is no longer slippery.)

Destroy every object (TODO):

I confess, I have yet to figure out how to destroy anything, but I think freezing the vial is a necessary first step before smashing it.

Freeze the vial (assuming normal temperature to start with):

> suveh tia siqui ani to. suveh tia siqui.

> x vial. shake vial. open vial.

English to Magic

Note: The game won't let you use magic words that you haven't learned yet.

Magic to English

The numbers are Laodian, but it's unclear if any other magical words are Laodian in origin.
