PRAY Responses[top] [menu]

So what happens if you pray in a work of interactive fiction? Usually, not much happens unless the player character is near an altar in a church or chapel. But it's often interesting to try, nonetheless, to see where the player character stands spiritually or to find out if you'll get some unexpected reward.

The Abbey (2008)

  • Ave Maria, gratia plena,
     Dominus tecum.
     Benedicta tu in mulieribus,
     et benedictus fructus ventris tui, Iesus.
     Sancta Maria, Mater Dei,
     ora pro nobis peccatoribus,
     nunc et in hora mortis nostrae.
     Amen.
  • Deus meus, ex toto corde poenitet
     me omnium meorum peccatorum,
     eaque detestor, quia peccando,
     non solum poenas a te iuste
     statutas promeritus sum,
     sed praesertim quia offendi te,
     summum bonum, ac dignum qui
     super omnia diligaris.
     Ideo firmiter propono,
     adiuvante gratia tua,
     de cetero me non peccaturum
     peccandique occasiones
     proximas fugiturum.
     Amen.
  • Pater noster, qui es in caelis:
     sanctificetur Nomen Tuum;
     adveniat Regnum Tuum;
     fiat voluntas Tua,
     sicut in caelo, et in terra.
     Panem nostrum cotidianum da nobis hodie;
     et dimitte nobis debita nostra,
     Sicut et nos dimittimus debitoribus nostris;
     et ne nos inducas in tentationem;
     sed libera nos a Malo.
     Amen.
  • Sub tuum praesidium confugimus,
     Sancta Dei Genitrix.
     Nostras deprecationes ne despicias
     in necessitatibus nostris,
     sed a periculis cunctis
     libera nos semper,
     Virgo gloriosa et benedicta. Amen.

You can feel the staggering power of her eyes turning, ever so slowly, towards you... Perhaps the weight of her gaze could actually crush one as tiny as you!

And, now that you think about it, clenching your hands tightly together and gulping, do you even need her help? Wouldn't you rather be able to say that you did it all yourself?

    Presently you are engulfed by shadows, a deep, almost palpable darkness, which rolls and rumbles and tingles and twirls and blots out the world and sensations around you.

I'll (2000)

There are those who look forward to today; those who are sure that theirs is the one, true religion; that today is their appointed hour. While the rest of us face today as the end, they look upon today as the new beginning. But I know it is too late to convert; I don't believe it, and pretending to believe it by praying now would never convince some all-powerful being that I believed it, no matter how Pascal might advise the gamble.

There is a flash of light down in the station below me; a puff of smoke; a stench of brimstone. A brutish red figure, too tall to be a man, stands suddenly there, and looks up at me. He calls out, in a grotesque mockery of a voice, "I have discovered that all human evil comes from this, man's inability to sit still in a room." With that, he crooks his finger at me, and

Something about tying the strings together. Don't particularly need My help with this one. On your own, then, yes." God vanishes in another holy flash.
  2. God appears before you in a brilliant thunderclap. His white beard, glistening white robe, and mildly confused expression fill you with dazzled reverence. "Oh, you again, yes?
